Meta Hyperion grows to $50 billion, with a peak crew of about 7,500
The Louisiana campus now runs to 2036. It's the longest runway on our board, and housing is the catch.
If you want years of work at one site, Meta's Hyperion campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is the one to watch.
The expansion
In July, Meta added $40 billion to the project, bringing its total commitment to $50 billion, according to WWNO. The campus will eventually cover more than 3,200 acres of former farmland and reach 5 gigawatts of computing capacity.
- Workforce - the construction workforce is expected to peak at about 7,500, roughly 50% above early estimates.
- Timeline - full build-out of both phases isn't expected until 2036.
- Power - Entergy Louisiana has asked to build 10 new natural gas plants plus solar and battery storage to serve the area. That's its own wave of work for linemen, substation crews and plant builders.
Life on the job
Fortune visited in March and found about 3,700 workers tied to the site, with around-the-clock equipment and trucks arriving before sunrise. The general contractor, DPR, had Mammoth Industries build a 130-acre workforce housing complex with more than 300 full-service RV sites, and two more RV parks on one road were set to add up to 700 hookups. Locals reported rising rents as crews arrived.
What it means for crews
- Steady over top dollar - Current postings pay $37-$43 an hour with $100-$170 a day per diem. Lower than New Mexico or Iowa, but the work runs for a decade.
- Apprentices welcome - Kidwell is hiring apprentices here, which is rare on our board.
- Book housing early - RV hookups and Monroe-area rentals go first. Rayville and Delhi are tight.
- Power work next - If Entergy's gas plants are approved, plant and substation work will follow in the area.
